Cyber Life

((This is a continuation of an on going rp. Please do not reply Crim, but ILU~!))

The 3D show was to show the audience what the world looked like when it was green, lush and vivid with colours, not just the few patches of enclosed space or everything that was on the surface and restricted for anyone earning a low pay rate, but the world before the cities clouded the skies, the ground became a distant memory and something only seen in holodecks to read about.

The seats were arranged for an outdoor gig and then the important people to migrate into the city hall just on the other side of the road from the New New York city park, celebrating its preservation day, the day in which the area was classed as a landmark and not to be touched in any way, shape or form aside from walking about the park. No food was allowed in there, no drinks, just peace and calm.

Derek was impressed with the budget stage set up. These people did have money, but it pretty much all went to looking after whatever was green that was left to the public to view. That took a lot of effort and time, and that's why the singer supported them and was now sitting through one of the most boring speeches he had ever bare witness to. It didn't show on his face, he was good at acting, but he was truly bored and still not up to speed after the hacking incident a few days ago which confined him to his house.

Deep inside, that royally pissed him off, and was about two words away from putting out a bounty on the hacker Red Storm to prove he wasn't going to be bullied just cause he couldn't walk among the coding that shaped the majority of their world.

Looking to his left to his manager, Yuri, he noted the man staring intensely into nothing, probably checking his emails or security reports for anything unusual. If anyone could catch that guy, it was Yuri.

Waving at the crowd from his seat on stage, he answered a few questions about why he was helping support the forests and the Eco Summit, sitting back down and apologizing profusely about not being able to sing, telling everyone that he might at the end of the concert if he felt better.

He surely hoped he did. He wanted to feel a little more free then he had over the past few days. Singing was heaven to him, and he didn't want to feel anything but that at all.

NNYCP. It was a stupid abbreviation, and if the idiots in the city's PR department had thought to ask, Anton could have given them a much, much better name for the park. One with an actually pronounceable acronym, to start with.

Not that they would have asked, even if he'd been in a position to be asked. Even if he could have gotten (or would have wanted, as pointless as even wanting such a thing would be) a job in city planning, he was still a gutter rat, just another warm body for them to take care of and, when the time came, exploited, not someone whose thoughts were considered worthy of being heard.

The more fools them.

Even more stupid was the whole idea of this concert. Oh yeah, save the park. A few square metres of carefully maintained and landscaped dirt and green, lovingly cultivated trees to masquerade as a glimpse into the inevitably idyllic past.

There was nothing idyllic about the past. Or about taunting the locals with it.

"How about fixing something that actually matters, you douchebrained fuckweasels," he muttered, dragging himself out of his inconveniently positioned packing-beanfilled excuse for a chair to see if his code revisions had finished compiling.

Reticulating splines, the screen read. Three minutes and 14 seconds remaining.

He swore profusely under his breath in several dead languages, a couple of fictional ones, and one he wasn't sure of. (What was Esperanto, anyway?) That'd balloon out to another six hours the moment anyone else came online, he'd just have to hope for better luck than he'd been having this week.

And that that creepy fucker with the typing impediment stayed off his back. (Or "those". He still couldn't quite rule out the possibility that there were more than one of them, but it felt like just one douche with a bunch of theatre-masks.)

Not that he could do anything about it now. At least, even if he did have to use one of the drafts instead of his masterpiece, Derek wouldn't be there to be caught in the chaos.

He really should feel bad about what he was about to do, he supposed. But this place was hell enough even with the faint scrap of hope he clung to. Without it, without these practice runs, these pressure valves, he might as well self-destruct right now.

The event was about to start. Only half-listening to the sound from the screen behind him, he held his breath and watched the timer count down.

It was going on for too long, and Derek was honestly, nearly falling asleep. The smile was still there, as each of the important speakers said their part, but he was wandering, eyes on the crowd, on the stage props, on the lights above and finally settling on his manager next to him.

Picking up a free wifi network, Derek logged into a private chat with Yuri, probably interrupting something important, so just in case, he opened up his friends chat also. Yuri, you are buying me dinner after this, I mean, trees are awesome, but this guy could talk the bark off all of them..., He said, a sigh could almost be felt through the words.

The speeches stopped and the music began, the local acts starting up to show off their talents, the singer's interest picking up at a one of them as they sang their way through a number of songs, smiling at their lead guitarist and giving him the thumbs up. They shuffled off with blush filled faces as the next band turned up and got started.

He got a shock as the local talent ended and close to the end of show, the secret guest talent got up on stage, leaning over the stage edge and holding out his hand to the bored looking singer. Kindle, another stupidly successful singer grinned down at Derek as he spoke into the microphone on his head set. "Come up here Moonstone. We'll sing that little number we did a few years ago."

Derek was on stage in a heartbeat, grinning like a madman as the music started up and they sang, despite the rumble of his stomach. He wasn't caring, he just wanted to have a good time, jumping around the stage, belting out the tunes and looking very suggestive as they danced close together.

This went on for a couple of more songs, each singer taking it in turns to sing something before the other would take over. Derek kind of didn't want this day to end, but he was going to need food after this and knew people would want to talk to him after the show. But for now, he was just enjoying himself.
